GMS Visitors to Canada Insurance Review

GMS (Group Medical Services) Visitors Insurance

GMS is a growing company in the Canadian health insurance industry, offering individual, group and travel related health insurance plans.

Advantages

  • GMS does cover expenses related to stable (180 days) pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Very easy to deal with from an administration point of view. No fees for early cancellation, only a $20 partial refund fee.
  • Low rates. Especially for those travelers willing to use a higher deductible. GMS offers $0, $100, $500 and $1000 deductible versions of their coverage, with healthy discounts.

Disadvantages

  • There is no coverage outside of North America. Side trips to the USA and Mexico are permitted.
  • Coverage for some secondary benefit items is not as high as it is on other plans (for example, dental, funeral, transportation of friend/relative, etc.).
  • Not available to persons that have been in Canada for more than 30 days.
  • Not available for visitors to Canada that are using an address in Quebec or New Brunswick as their main place of visit.
  • Long list of eligibility requirements related to medical conditions.
