Special Risks Cumis Visitors Insurance

Special Risks Cumis Visitors to Canada Insurance

Special Risks MRM Inc. is a small independent player in the Canadian travel insurance market, which has been quite aggressive in pursuing the super visa health insurance business, created in late 2011. As such, they have attractive prices for visitors to Canada including super visa and IEC (international experience Canada) visa holders, as well as returning Canadians and recent immigrants seeking a policy that offers emergency medical coverage before being covered by provincial health care. The underwriter they use is Cumis Insurance, and the claims management company is Allianz Global Assistance.

Advantages

This policy offers a fairly standard level of secondary benefits (how much they will pay for paramedical or accidental dental expenses for example), at a very competitive price. The policy will allow for side trips back to ones home country during the duration of policy, unlike similar (no pre-ex) coverage from Destination Canada.

Disadvantages

For super visa holders, there is a 12% of remaining balance plus $25 refund fee for any cancellations or early return (refund) requests, unless a visa denial letter can be provided.

Unlike other plans, partial refunds are only granted as of the day all supporting information is provided to the Special Risks. They will not back date a refund request to the date of return to ones home country, or to the date one becomes covered by provincial health care.

Partial refunds that occur more than 6 months past the purchase date have to be processed manually and paid by cheque, Special Risks will not return funds to credit card in this situation like other insurance companies - so partial refunds can take considerable time to complete.
